A Hearty German Potato and Broccoli Casserole Recipe to Elevate Your Dinner

Kartoffel-Brokkoli-Auflauf, or Potato Broccoli Casserole, is a hearty and delicious dish that hails from Germany. This comforting recipe features a delectable combination of potatoes and broccoli, baked to perfection with a savory and creamy cheese sauce. With its rich flavors and wholesome goodness, this classic German dish has been a family favorite for generations.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of potatoes
  • 500 grams of broccoli
  • 200 ml of cream
  • 200 grams of cheese (cheddar or Gouda)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the Base: Start by preheating your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit). Wash and peel the potatoes, then cut them into thin slices. Wash the broccoli and cut it into small florets. Boil both in salted water until they are half-cooked, then drain. In a bowl, mix the cream, eggs, grated garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Grease a baking dish with butter and arrange the potato slices and broccoli in it. Pour the cream mixture over them.
  2. Add the Cheese: Grate the cheese and spread it evenly over the potato and broccoli in the baking dish. Drizzle on some olive oil.
  3. Bake the Casserole: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  4. Serve and Garnish: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes so it sets. To serve, cut into portions and garnish with some fresh herbs if desired. It's best enjoyed hot.

Tip:

Choose a sharp cheddar or a mildly flavored Gouda for the cheese topping to get a good balance of flavor and creaminess. You can also replace half of the potatoes with sweet potatoes for a unique twist on the classic recipe. And if you're a bacon lover, adding some crispy bacon bits on top can take the flavor to a whole new level.
