Known as a widely loved dish in Hungary and Germany, the Deftige Gulaschsuppe represents a rich and hearty stew brimming with meat, vegetables, and spiced with Paprika. Its origins can be traced back to medieval Hungary, and it has since been an essiential dish in central Europe making it an absolute comfort food staple during cold winter monts.
Ingredients:
- 500 grams of beef chunks
- 2 large onions, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons of sunflower oil
- 3 tablespoons of Paprika powder
- 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds
- 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
- 2 red bell peppers, diced
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1.5 liters of beef broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Prepare the Base: Start by heating the sunflower oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add your chopped onions and minced garlic, sauté them until they are translucent. Then, introduce beef chunks and brown them on all sides. Toss in the Paprika powder, caraway seeds, and tomato paste, stir for a few minutes until the spices release their aroma. Add your diced bell peppers, potatoes, and finally the beef broth.
- Simmer and Serve: Reduce the heat, cover the pot, and let the soup simmer for about 2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to your taste. Stir occasionally and make sure the stew doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot. After 2 hours, your Deftige Gulaschsuppe should be aromatic and the meat should be tender. Serve the soup hot, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley if desired, and with crusty bread on the side for a complete, hearty meal.
Tip:
For an even richer flavor, you can marinate the beef chunks in the Paprika powder, minced garlic, and diced onions overnight in the fridge. This allows the meat to soak up more flavor, creating a more robust stew. Also, remember that a good Gulaschsuppe is determined by the quality of the Paprika powder, so find the best you can.
