Grießbrei, or semolina pudding, is a beloved German dish that has its roots in traditional German cuisine. For many Germans, this simple yet delicious dish brings back memories of their grandmother's kitchen, hence the name ""von Großmutter"". This creamy dessert is made with just a handful of ingredients but has a comforting, delicious flavor that you'll surely love.
Ingredients:
- 100 grams of Semolina
- 500 ml of Milk
- 2-3 tablespoons of Sugar (adjust to sweetness preference)
- 1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
- A pinch of salt
- Garnish: Sugar, Cinnamon, Fruit, or Jams (optional)
Preparation:
- Prepare the Base: First, pour the milk into a pot, and bring it to a boil over medium heat. Once the milk is boiling, add the sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, stir to combine. Gradually add semolina to the pot, constantly stirring to avoid lumps. Once all the semolina is in, reduce the heat to low and continue to stir the mixture until it thickens to a creamy consistency.
- Serve and Garnish: The semolina pudding can be served hot or cold, according to preference. Before serving, you may choose to garnish your Grießbrei. Traditional German garnishes include a dusting of cinnamon, a sprinkle of sugar, or with some fruit or jam. Apple sauce or cherry compote is often a popular choice. Serve your Grießbrei in bowls garnished with your choice.
Tip:
To make your Grießbrei even creamier, you can separate some of the milk before boiling, and mix it with a tablespoon of cornstarch. Once the semolina has thickened, add this milk-cornstarch mix and stir until the desired creaminess is achieved.
