Savor the Mediterranean with this Traditional Greek Farmer's Salad Recipe

Beloved by Greeks and salad enthusiasts alike, the Griechischer Bauernsalat, also known as Greek Farmer's Salad, is a vibrant, refreshing medley of fresh vegetables, olives, and feta cheese. Originally considered a peasant dish due to its humble ingredients, this salad has certainly climbed the culinary ladder. Much like Greece itself, this salad is a celebration of simplicity, freshness, and high-quality produce. While various incarnations exist based on the region, the core essence of the recipe remains rooted in its traditional foundation.

Ingredients:

  • 3 medium ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced into rings
  • 1 cucumber, partially peeled and cut into thin slices
  • 1 bell pepper (color of your choice), seeded and diced
  • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives
  • 200 grams Feta cheese, cubed or crumbled
  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the Base: In a large bowl, combine the tomatoes, onion, cucumber, bell pepper, and Kalamata olives. Drizzle with olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle the dried oregano. Toss everything together until well combined.
  2. Serve and Garnish: Once the salad is well mixed, add the Feta cheese on top. You can either spread the cheese evenly or place a large piece at the center. Serve immediately or leave it in the fridge for a bit to let the flavors meld together. It’s a versatile dish that can be served as a stand-alone meal, side dish, or as part of a mezze platter.

Tip:

For an authentic experience, use Greek extra virgin olive oil and Greek Feta. The rich, fruity olive oil and the tangy, creamy Feta will elevate your Griechischer Bauernsalat. Plus, to make the flavors pop, allow the salad to sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the ingredients to marinate, bringing out the flavors in full force. Enjoy your meal, or as the Greeks would say, ""Kali Orexi""!
