Originating from the Alsace region on the French-German border, tarte flambée is a traditional dish that has delighted palates for generations. Often considered a type of German pizza, Flammkuchen, or "tarte flambée", is a thin, crispy tart topped with creme fraiche, onions, and bacon. This satisfying dish offers a delicious blend of creaminess, saltiness, and a hint of sweetness from the caramelized onions.
Ingredients:
- 150g all-purpose flour
- A pinch of salt
- 75ml lukewarm water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 100g bacon, diced into small pieces
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 120g crème fraîche or sour cream
- A pinch of nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
- Prepare the Base: In a big bowl, combine the flour with a pinch of salt. Add the lukewarm water and the vegetable oil to the mixture. Using your hands, mix until it forms a smooth dough. On a floured work surface, roll the dough into a thin ellipse shape.
- Prepare the Topping: Preheat your oven to 470 degrees F (240 degrees C). While the oven heats up, pan-fry the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and in the same pan, sauté the onion until golden brown and caramelized. Set both aside. In a separate bowl, combine the crème fraîche with a pinch of nutmeg, salt and pepper. Spread this creamy base evenly over the prepared dough. Top with the caramelized onions and crispy bacon.
- Baking: Transfer the Flammkuchen on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges of the dough are crispy and slightly browned.
- Serve and Garnish: Remove the Flammkuchen from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice it similar to a pizza and serve it immediately for the best taste experience.
Tip:
If you want to give an additional flavorful twist to your Einfacher Flammkuchen, feel free to add some shredded cheese before baking. After baking, you can also sprinkle it with chives or spring onions for added color and freshness.
